- Stock your pocket/pouch with a dog’s favorite treats.
Put a collar or harness on her and attach a 6-foot leash.
Go to a doorway with a door in a room that the dog is comfortable in. Make sure there are no distractions. - Bait your hand and lure the dog into a sit position Give the Sit or Look cue, so the dog is in a sitting position or looking at you.
- Once the dog is looking at you, move your hand in a sideways position palm facing the dog, in front of her face (see emoji above). After giving the hand signal, say “Wait” and take one step toward the door. If the dog stays in a sit position, say “Yes” and reward. The point of this exercise is that your dog waits until you exit the door and then the dog can follow.
- Continue to practice with your dog, taking one step at a time until you are completely out of the door. Then tell her to come.
- Practice this exercise until a dog “Sit-and Waits” until you are able to exit the door without the dog breaking the wait for 90 percent of the time.
- Practice this exercise at every door way in your home where there is an actual door. Your dog will learn to wait at every door until you go through. At this point, you will not have to tell her to come, the fact that you are through the door is her cue to go.
